The SPI team welcomes a new Scientific Director, Gabriela Schaepman-Strub. Prof. Schaepman-Strub is an associate professor of Earth System Science at the University of Zurich and is specialised in Arctic biodiversity and ecosystem functions, applying experiments, modelling, and remote sensing.  She has acted as a representative of Switzerland in many international working groups on polar topics and is an active member of the Swiss Committee on Polar and High Altitude Research (SKPH). Prof. Schaepman-Strub has been involved in the SPI activities since the creation of the institute, most recently serving as the Chair of its Science and Technology Advisory Board. She was elected for a term of four years.

Gabriela is excited to join the Swiss Polar Institute in her new role. “My goal is to shape SPI’s scientific mission to support the polar research community, create synergies, and spark novel scientific ideas. I feel honored to contribute to increase the scientific, societal and policy impact and visibility of Swiss polar research nationally and internationally”.
