Before setting foot on South Georgia, all visitors must scrutinize every item they are taking with the utmost care: backpacks, jackets, hats, camera cases, shoes – everything! The point is to catch even the smallest seed that might be hiding in the lining of boots, pockets, or velcro seals, and prevent new invasive plant species from colonizing the island. The visitors take the task very seriously, vigorously scrubbing their boots, and not hesitating to give their clothes another pass with the vacuum cleaner. And then, they all had to sign a paper certifying that their items had passed the test.
Avant de poser le pied en Géorgie du Sud, tout visiteur est tenu à un examen minutieux des affaires qu’il compte emmener avec lui: sac à dos, veste, bonnet, étui de caméra, chaussures, tout y passe! Le but de l’opération est de traquer la moindre graine qui pourrait se cacher dans le profil des bottes, dans les poches de pantalon ou sur les fermetures velcro, et d’éviter ainsi que de nouvelles espèces végétales invasives ne colonisent l’île. Les participants ont pris la tâche très au sérieux, frottant leur bottes avec vigueur et n’hésitant pas à donner un coup d’aspirateur supplémentaire à leurs habits. Ils devaient ensuite signer un papier certifiant que leurs objets avaient bien passé le test.
