The Swiss Polar Institute has created and launched dedicated funding opportunities to complement existing offers and fill gaps linked to the specific needs of science undertaken in polar regions.
The Polar Access Fund offers early-career researchers funding to complement their research with a field trip to a polar region or a remote high-altitude area. Additionally, students and early-career scientists can benefit from SPI funding to participate in international field and summer schools. The SPI Exploratory Grants offer funding to start new collaborations and fund logistics related to research projects in high latitudes.
Since 2019, the SPI also issues an annual call dedicated to technology development and a bi-annual call based on art-science collaboration. The SPI Technogrants are aimed at funding the development of instrumentation and technologies relevant for polar sciences. PolARTS is a collaboration between Pro Helvetia, the Swiss Arts Council, and SPI aiming at promoting exchange between arts and polar sciences. More information can be found on the dedicated webpages.
The SPI Flagship Initiatives, multi-annual programmes combining science and technology projects from different disciplines around a polar or remote high-altitude focus region, has been launched at the beginning of 2021.
