Lay summary

Description of the programme

The Karthaus Summer School provides an introduction to diverse topics in glaciology, with a focus on modeling and on ice sheets in a changing climate. Some of the course highlights are: the opportunity to learn from leading experts in the field, the chance to build a lasting community with students and lecturers, and the breathtaking location!

How did you benefit from the programme?

benefitted from this training by getting a clear overview of the major topics in glaciology and ice-climate interactions. The course focus was well aligned with my PhD, since I work on modeling of subglacial processes in ice sheets, the understanding of which will allow us to gain insights into the response of ice sheets to climate change. Since I am just beginning my PhD, this was especially helpful for me as it allowed putting my work into context, gaining in-depth knowledge and skills directly and indirectly related to my project, and building an international network with glaciologists across diverse career stages.

What were the highlights of the training?

My personal highlight of the training was the uniquely positive learning environment. The dedication of the lecturers to the collaborative course culture really made a big difference in learning the theory, getting the practical experience, and enjoying our free time.

Would you recommend the programme to other students?

I definitely would. My experience in the course was wonderful, and I believe I will benefit from it in the short and long term.
