Participation in GRISO Summer School 2024
Université de Lausanne - UNIL
Lay summary
Description of the programme
The GRISO Summer School is a program that gives an interdisciplinary approach to science conducted in and about Greenland. Topics covered during the course evolved around glaciology, fjord and ocean circulation & hydrography and human adaptation & resilience to climate change. The course consists of lectures by the organisers (members of the GRISO network from different universities) as well as local experts and visits to local research institutes and field stations in and around Nuuk. In addition to this, a facilitator from Knowinnovaiton provides interactive activities focussing on creative problem solving, collaborating in multi-disciplinary teams and leadership.
How did you benefit from the programme?
The course provided an interdisciplinary approach to conducting science in Greenland which puts your own research into a wider perspective. The course also allows for thinking beyond your own research questions and the value of your research for Greenland. The lectures by local researchers and visits to the Arctic Hub and the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources in Nuuk provided valuable resources and tools for doing meaningful research in Greenland. Of course, the network that you build during the course with participants and local experts is also highly valuable for future research.
What were the highlights of the training?
- Big variety of lectures on social and natural sciences topics related to Greenland
- Field trips by boat in the area round Nuuk
- Networking events with local experts, researchers and institutions
- Diverse group of participants from different fields within Arctic research
- Getting familiar with resources available to conduct Greenland science in a sensible way
Would you recommend the programme to other students?
I would highly recommend the programme, for any advanced PhD student or Postdoc that is interested in research in Greenland. The summer school is especially useful if you are interested in building a network within the Greenland research community and if you are keen to learn more about how to conduct research in Greenland in a more ethical and inclusive way which is in alignment with Greenland’s new research strategy. The strategy emphasises that ‘Research in and around Greenland should first and foremost benefit Greenland’.
