Participation in Patagonian Icefield Research Program 2024
Universität Bern
Lay summary
Description of the programme
The Patagonian Icefield Research Program (PIRP) is a three-week expedition-based glaciological field school for early-career scientists in cryospheric sciences that is held on Bernal Glacier, Patagonia, Chile. The program is run by a small group of local and international researchers who mentor 10-15 students in learning, researching, and living in the wild Patagonian glacier environments. Students lead cutting-edge scientific projects that they propose or choose from those offered by the faculty. The faculty, who specialize in glaciology and other earth science disciplines, explain the basic principles and teach the practical aspects of using the various instruments or techniques.
How did you benefit from the programme?
During my studies (Bachelors, Masters, PhD) I myself participated in several summer and winter schools (e.g. Deep Ice Finse Winter School, Juneau Icefield Research Program) and found them extremely valuable for my scientific and personal development. Now that my scientific career has progressed, participating in such programs as a faculty member provides me with a great opportunity to improve and expand my teaching skills and to gain further competencies - this is highly desirable as I plan a long-term scientific career in academia where teaching and mentoring the next generation of researchers is required (also with regard to my own research group that I plan to build in the future). I contribute to the training of students and future researchers by sharing my experience, skills and knowledge. Furthermore, I aim to use the observations and data collected in the field beyond the duration of the program and to carry out further analysis, ideally leading to published research in collaboration with the students involved in the project.
What were the highlights of the training?
It was a fantastic experience to explore the stunning Patagonian glaciers as part of an incredible team of international students and researchers, all united by a shared passion for glaciers. I had the opportunity to inspire students by passing on my expertise and experience through engaging classroom lectures in the heart of nature, fostering a deeper understanding of glacial environments.
Would you recommend the programme to other students?
I can definitely recommend the program to all early-career students of any cryosphere-related studies.
It is a unique opportunity to gain first experience in glaciological field work techniques or to carry out your first own field project under the guidance and supervision of an experienced scientist.
