Lay summary

In South Greenland, water manifests in various interconnected forms. The sea, glaciers, lakes and rivers form a united network, and their on-going evolution has significant influences on one another. The rapid acceleration of glacier melting is swiftly altering the states of nearby lakes, with new lakes forming in the land exposed by the retreating ice, and with changing connections of lakes to glacial systems. How do we put our bodies and machines to work to fully understand a rapidly changing landscape? How are the various waters in South Greenland interconnected today and through time? And how can science and art in combination play an important role in rethinking the ways we understand and talk about landscapes in crisis? Through the study of glacial-origin lakes of different ages and environmental conditions in Southern Greenland, our goal is to research water in order to draw a holistic portrait of the impact of glacier retreat on the local lake landscape.
